Martha Dewey Bergren, RN, MS, BC, NCSN teaches acute and community child health and school nursing at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. She recently authored a chapter on electronic records in Legal Issues in School Health Services: A Resource for School Nurses, Administrators and Attorneys, edited by N. Schwab & M. Gelfman (North Branch, MN: Sunrise River Press, 2001)

The fax has a vital place in school health nursing practice. Using a facsimile machine can streamline medication communications, parental permissions, and doctor’s orders. Nonetheless, there are confidentiality concerns and the potential for abuse. School health office practices for ethical and prudent use of fax technology are outlined.
