Decision Support Tools Aid School Nursing Practice
Angela Lewis, RN, BSN, BC, is project manager, clinical information systems for La Rabida Childrens Hospital, Chicago, IL. Angelas current role is to improve nursing practice and patient care by facilitating clinicians use of information systems technologies in an acute care pediatric setting. Her research interests include decision support and handheld technology. She is currently pursuing graduate studies in informatics
Fran Belmonte-Mann, RN, MA, is currently nurse facilitator for the Chicago Public School System, Chicago, IL. As school nurse administrator, she supervises a comprehensive program for 20,000 high-risk children from birth to 5 years of age. Fran is also the publisher of the first electronic journal for school nurses, School Nurse Action News The purpose of this article is to explain the use of technology as a tool to aid the school nurses decision-making process. This article demonstrates how decision support tools improve school nurses decision making regarding client care and nursing practice. Various decision support systems are discussed, examples provided, and the underlying technology explained. A listing of decision support systems and specific applications for school nurses are reviewed.
